Contrary to popular belief, the peanut or Arachis hypogaea is a leguminous plant of the same family as the green pea. It is considered a nut because it contains only minute amounts of water, but in fact it is biologically unrelated to either the almond or the hazelnut. It originated in the Americas and is thought to have first been cultivated as much as 4,000 to 5,000 years ago. The one thing it does have in common with other nuts is its high nutritional value.

· First and foremost, peanuts are a high protein food. With about 25% protein they have a much higher content than other nuts. This is important because vegetable proteins can complement one another. So, for example, the proteins from legumes, in this case the peanut, are a perfect complement to proteins from grains, such as those in bread.
· Of course the fat content of peanuts is extremely important. Half the fat in peanuts is made up of oleic acid and they contain traces of saturated fats. This means that in many cases peanut spread can be used to replace butter, thereby avoiding the negative effects on the cardiovascular system that butter can have.
· Its content of B-complex vitamins, especially vitamins B3 and B6, is also much greater than that of other nuts. Vitamin B6 plays a key role in many bodily processes. Among other things, it is an essential co-factor in the metabolism of proteins. By the way, people who regularly drink alcoholic beverages or who take birth control pills may require increased amounts of vitamin B6.
